About Piedmont, South Carolina
In 1843, the site that would become Piedmont was nothing more than a grist mill and a log cabin at Garrison Shoals on the Saluda River. That changed in 1873 when Henry Pinckney Hammett founded the Piedmont Manufacturing Company, making it one of the oldest textile manufacturing towns in South Carolina. By 1876, the Number One mill was operational with 5,000 spindles and 112 looms, and when the Number Two mill opened across the Saluda River in Anderson County in 1888, the combined operation became one of the largest textile mills in the world. Piedmont was the first South Carolina mill to export cloth to China, an early global trade pioneer decades ahead of its time.
The company built a complete mill village around the facility, and that foundational residential character still defines Piedmont today. The town physically straddles both Greenville and Anderson counties, divided by the Saluda River, a legally uncommon arrangement that gives it a dual-county identity found nowhere else in the Upstate. The river itself provides kayaking, fishing, and tubing through town, with the Saluda River Rambler offering a popular 6-mile kayak rental run. Just 13 miles from downtown Greenville along US-29, Piedmont delivers authentic small-town living with affordable home prices and access to the Upstate's largest job market. The announced $500 million EnerSys battery manufacturing plant nearby, targeting 500+ jobs by late 2027, signals a new chapter of economic growth for this resilient river community.
