Easley owes its existence to a railroad and a gentleman's modesty. In 1845, Col. Robert Elliott Holcombe opened the area's first store in what was then called Rockville. When General William King Easley, a Confederate veteran turned railroad attorney, persuaded the Atlanta and Charlotte Railroad to route its tracks through town, Holcombe was given the honor of naming the new depot. He reportedly declined to use his own name, saying it "wasn't very attractive," and chose Easley instead because it "sounded better."
